t the 2018 UFDC Convention in
Phoenix, Arizona, I had the privilege
to present a program for the junior
convention attendees on the topic of American
Girl. This presentation detailed the evolution
of the American Girl doll - how it began, and
where it is today.
The American Girl doll was introduced in
1985 as an idea to provide girls with a doll that
would act as friend or companion. Pleasant
Rowland, their creator, noticed how most
dolls on the market for girls either encouraged
motherhood, or were super models. So, she
sought out to create a doll that would bring
to life a whole new perspective in girlhood,
while enriching girls in the value of playtime.
An interesting feature was that she decided to
create the dolls as characters, each representing
a different time in American history, bringing
to life that specific period. She wanted girls
to find in these dolls both a playmate and an
adventure through American history.
