The American Girl dolls were modeled after the German "GOTZ" dolls. The first three
characters were Kirsten Larsen, Samantha Parkington, and Molly McIntire. Each character had
her own set of books and accessories, which allowed girls to go on adventures with the characters
through the magic of storytelling. As time passed, and the company grew, more dolls were added
to the collection. The first to be added was Felicity Merriman, whose stories were based during
the Colonial America period. The addition of this doll resulted in the bodies of all the dolls to be
transitioned from white to nude, due to the wide-cut style of colonial clothing. Then came the first
African American doll, Addy Walker, who grew up during the Civil War era. Her stories allowed
girls to almost experience first-hand what life was like for a slave girl during the Civil War.
Over time, the company has added, as well as archived, many more characters and dolls from
the collection. The addition of "Just Like You" dolls was an opportunity for girls to create their own
character and stories with their dolls. "Girl of the Year" dolls gave girls a modern-day companion
with her own stories and adventures, while teaching valuable lessons in problems that girls face
today. The opening of many American Girl stores has proven beneficial to both the company and its
customers, so that girls can visit the stores and experience the special act of picking out their doll.
Bitty Baby and Wellie Wishers were eventually launched in order to give younger girls a companion
until they were old enough to play with and appreciate the other characters.
In 1998, Pleasant Rowland officially sold her company to Mattel for $700 million. Later, in
2004, the Pleasant Company was renamed "American Girl." Many more dolls have come and
gone in these thirty-four years of the company's history. American Girl has remained strong and
successful, still providing girls with that sense of enjoyment and companionship through the dolls
and their stories.
While doing my research, I discovered many hidden gems about the American Girl Doll and its
