"Janette" by Fawn
Zeller was Fawn's
third national
souvenir. As was the
custom then, the doll
was named after the
UFDC President,
Jan Quisenberry. It
was produced by
the U.S. Historical
Society and
manufactured off
shore in an edition
of 1510.
"Jeanette's" hairstyle
allows her to be
dressed in several
different historical
periods. Fawn
intended the doll
to be used as an
inspiration for doll
dressmakers.

By 1952 thirty-one clubs were
members of UFDC. DOLL NEWS
disseminated information to all
members. It was becoming more
important to share information with
a growing number of members.
At the time, Janet Johl was the
editor of the magazine and at the
convention business meeting she
asked for an increase in the DOLL
NEWS subscription rate. Delegates
agreed and the rate rose to $1.00.
The convention was held in Chicago,
Illinois. The souvenir was a locket.
Early conventions traveled from
city to city, depending upon which
UFDC club was selected to host the
event. Miami, Boston, Cleveland, San
Francisco, St. Louis and Universal
City (CA) were some of the places
visited by members for their annual
meeting. As time wore on, more and
more convention guests attended,
and larger hotels were required. In
the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the
size of convention grew into twelve
and fifteen hundred. Larger hotels
with adequate space became more
difficult to find, especially since
cost was always a consideration.
It became convenient to return to
several cities in rotation. Now that
numbers have declined, smaller cities
have once again become appealing.
As convention grew it became
unmanageable for individual clubs.
The Executive Committee began to
manage plans, appointing individuals
to the position of Convention
Coordinator. Eventually that position
was folded into the Second VicePresident's job description. Today,
convention is managed by the Second
Vice-President, with the help and
guidance of the rest of the Executive
Committee.
