The UFDC 50th Anniversary doll was
made during 1999. It was recreated from
the 1991 national souvenir, "Janette." The
doll is 8-½- inches tall. The dolls were
originally packaged with patterns and fabric
to create a wardrobe of the early 1800s.
All proceeds from the doll sales were earmarked for the Target 2000-Building for
the Future Fund. The price of the doll was
$125 plus $8 shipping. Here she is shown
wearing some of the clothing from her
original set of patterns.

and dressed by members of the Pittsburg
Doll Club. A manufactured example that
comes to mind is Josephine, the souvenir
of the 1995 Region 2-N Conference. The
doll was made by the Wendy Lawton Doll
Company. The companion was a leather
suitcase with a wardrobe for the doll.
Each souvenir is unique to its time
and place and although UFDC does not
allow reproductions of its souvenirs,
there was one exception to this rule.
In 1999 the Executive Committee
commissioned Helen Carr to make
an 8-½-inch reproduction of the 1991
souvenir, Janette, by Fawn Zeller.
Patterns marked with the UFDC 50th
Anniversary logo were also issued. The
doll was popular with collectors. One
group, The Sun City Doll Club, a sewing
club, was attracted to the idea of making
a project of the doll. They researched
the fashions of their chosen period - the
early 1800s. Each member built a story
around her doll. Months of enjoyment
were spent arranging events and stories
for the dolls. It would be very interesting
to see some of this large and fascinating
endeavor today. Or for a club to have a
similar project.
To quote the late Shirley Buchholz,
former President of UFDC, "Let us look at
souvenir dolls for what they are rather than
what they are not. They are very special dolls
constructed of talent, emotion, individual and
group effort plus a lot of intangible memories
of special occasions. They are not works-ofart to be sold in the market place. They are
not toys for children to play with."
