Doll books that were available at the time included, Peeps
at the World's Dolls by H.W. Canning-Wright, Dolls, A
Guide for Collectors by Clara Fawcett, Dolls of Yesterday
by St. George, On Making, Mending and Dressing Dolls
by Clara Fawcett, A Pageant of Dolls by Lesley Gardon
and Fascinating Story of Dolls by Janet Pagter Johl.

Featured as the centerfold paper doll for the October 1949
issue of Jack and Jill Magazine was Grandmother and
Father by Tana Hoban and Marie Martino. They are from
a series called Harvey's Snapshots, about a 14-year old
boy named Harvey who wants to become a professional
photographer, starting with photographs of his family.
They are great examples of the clothing of the period.

This press photo is
dated August 17, 1949,
published by the Cleveland
Press. The handwriting
on the back reads, "Doll
Parade/playground
parade" but gives no other
information. The dolls the
girls are holding range
from antique bisque dolls
to current dolls at the time.
Internet and numerous
newspaper searches have
uncovered no information
about this event. If any of
the readers can shed more
light on this interesting
parade please let the
author know.

In the Battle Creek
Enquirer and News
J.C. Penney Company
advertised a layaway
plan for their baby dolls
in the July 13, 1949
ad in the. The babies
were large, ranging in
size from 18-inches to
25-inches. The bottom
left corner shows a
12-inch 'Brother and
Sister' pair also offered.

of different countries and 'name' dolls, bearing the name of a certain manufacturer
or designer. You might want to collect 'Penny Woodens', hand-carved in wood by
German and Tyrolean toymakers in the 18th century and later produced for a penny in
New England. Or perhaps you would prefer the elegant French bisque dolls and the
elaborate worldly wardrobes that sometimes accompany them. Or one of dozens of
other categories of dolls made of rag, rubber, china, cornhusks, metal, etc."
It doesn't seem like doll collecting was that different than today. There were about
fifteen doll reference books available, all in black and white. Antique bisque and china
head dolls seem to be the most focused on. Young collectors concentrated on ethnic
dolls. From these books it seems that if you were collecting you were probably also
making and/or mending dolls as well. Patterns were available for the collector to
fashion doll clothing for their dolls. There was no internet then, nor Google, nor online auctions. The first UFDC convention would take place in 1950.
