12-inch Godey Lady
Book dolls.
From an unknown New Orleans paper, this December 6,
1949 press photo caption reads, "Mrs. Grunning poses
with some of the 167 dolls already refurbished this year.
Not everyone can do such work, but Orleanians can
help other needy children by giving money to The Times
Picayune Doll and Toy and Christmas Gift Funds."

Collectors by Clara Hallard Fawcett (1947), How
to Make Your Own Dolls by Grace Schauffler
(1948), A Pageant of Dolls by Lesley Gordon
(1949), Making, Mending and Dressing Old Dolls
by Clara Hallard Fawcett (1949, reissued 1963),
Dolls of Yesterday by St. George (1948) and The
Complete Book of Doll Making and Collecting
by Catherine Christopher (1949). Marriage of
Dolls and Diamonds was co-authored in 1947
by Dorothy Dignam and Mary E. Lewis, the
founder of UFDC.
Since the Civil War era, dolls were dressed
and used to benefit charities, a trend that
continued. Doll displays were set up and
admission tickets were sold to raise funds for
hospitals and other charitable organizations.
Sometimes the dolls were sold or auctioned off
as well. From press releases and photos, we find
that dolls were also collected in campaign drives
of either new or refurbished dolls to be given
to less fortunate children during the holidays.
Jacobson's Department Store in Battle Creek, Michigan, offered
"Every little curly-top dreams of precious CHRISTMAS DOLLS."
Pictured in a December 9, 1949 ad is "Angelskin" and "Sleephead."
Sleephead, shown here, is 14-½-inches long and was made by
Knickerbocker, with a washable face and plush body. Selling for
$4.95, there was even a zipper in the back to hold pajamas.
