In 1949 the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott was made into a movie. With the story of the coming
of age of four Victorian teenage girls, Madame Alexander quickly released dolls in outfits and hairdos very
similar to those seen on the actors in the movie. Shown is a group of Madame Alexander Little Women
dolls, from left to right, Amy (Margaret face), Beth and Jo (both Maggie faces) and Meg (Margaret head).

Opposite page: The Toni doll was made by the Ideal Toy Company from 1949 -1953. Toni was produced in several
sizes ranging from 14-inches to 23/24-inches. To promote sales of the Toni Home Permanent, the doll came with a
permanent wave kit specifically designed for a little girl to give to her doll. The dolls were available in many hair colors
from platinum and golden blonde to red, brown, or the rare black so every little girl could have a Toni doll with hair color
close to her own. Unlike so many fancy dolls of the era, little girls were encouraged to wash, comb and perm the hair
on their Toni doll. This complete kit included the 14-inch hard plastic Toni. The Toni doll box featured this statement:
"There's Enough Nylon in the Toni Doll's Wig to Make 7 Pairs of Nylon Stockings." Coming after a time when women
