Madame Alexander's Coronation Dolls of 1953 by Rodney Waller Madame Alexander is shown with her extraordinary Queen Elizabeth especially created for the Abraham & Straus Exhibition. M adame Alexander, one of the most celebrated women entrepreneurs in the doll industry, never missed an opportunity to create and promote a new doll inspired by Hollywood films or celebrity events without any licensing arrangement. She did it in 1933 with her Little Women cloth dolls (RKO Radio) and in 1933 with Alice in Wonderland (Paramount) and Little Red Riding Hood (Walt Disney). Again, in 1934 with Katharine Hepburn in Little Minister (RKO Radio) and in 1935 with David Copperfield (MGM). Again, in 1936 with Little Lord Fauntleroy (United Artists) and even later in 1956 with Lucille Ball in Forever Darling (MGM). Madame Alexander had also produced a line of composition Princess Elizabeth dolls, inspired by the publicity surrounding the coronation of King George VI in 1936. 86 SPRING 2019
