the United States would be delayed
for many hours. Both CBS and NBC
had devised elaborate plans to pick up
copies of the BBC film in London and
fly it to Newfoundland in speciallyleased planes, each one hoping to have
pictures by the nightly newscasts.
Both failed and didn't get their film
clips until the next day. For a public
hungry for images and details of the
coronation, the CBS broadcast of the
dolls served as an invaluable function.
In a fascinating interview, Madame
Alexander related how the television
broadcast took place. There was the
problem. The dolls - all 36 of them -
were on display in the store and could
not be removed until after the store
closed. They would then need to be
returned before the store opened the next
day. Frances, the store's Special Events
Coordinator, had rented a small truck
and after the store closed for the day, she
single-handedly packed all the dolls and
rushed them to the CBS studio. As it was
only 3:00 a.m. and the studio was locked,
Frances slept in the truck until she could
enter the studio building. She then set up
the dolls for filming and returned them
to the store before it was noticed they
were gone. In her interview, Madame
said she learned years later that Frances
had been "retired" for having removed
the dolls from the store for this special
presentation.
When the coronation event was
finally over, what happened to this set
of 36 extraordinary dolls? Madame
Alexander approached the Metropolitan
Museum of New York City to see if the
museum would accept the dolls for
the museum's collections. However,
the Metropolitan could only accept the
dolls for two years. Then Robert Blum,
who was one of the owners of Abraham
& Straus, put Madame in touch
with Brooklyn Children's Museum,
where he also served on the Board
of Trustees. The Brooklyn Children's
Museum happily agreed to give the set
a permanent home and it is where the
dolls reside to this day.
