JOYCE CHRISTOPHER Sculpting a Generation by Bradley Justice Dolls and Photographs courtesy of Billye Harris/UFDC Museum Collection ©Barbie is a registered trademark of Mattel A s a person who enjoys research, I know of many sculptors in the toy and doll industry. However, no others that I am aware of, have enjoyed such remarkable success as Joyce Christopher. She seems to have been involved with most every successful doll and company over three decades from Barbie to Elvis and everything in between. This photograph shows a young Joyce Christopher around 1997. Kiddle photographs of head molds appeared in the vast archive that was part of the Joyce Christopher Collection. Many of the early Kiddles were done by NIADA artist Martha Armstrong Hand, and later several were by Joyce Christopher. 10 SUMMER 2019 Several Sculptors would often provide samples for a particular doll. While Martha Armstrong Hand's Sculpt would become the "Cheerful Tearful" doll that we came to know, it is interesting to see Joyce Christopher's take on it. Christopher's talented hands at work.
