hands usually found on Queen Anne-style dolls. "Jane Austin (Austen)" was dressed by Helen
in a simple, Regency-style white gown, and has in-period painted curls framing her face.

A late nineteenth
century "Milliner's"
type doll was part
of the Laughon's
vintage and antique
doll collection. The
typical molded
hairdo of these
dolls seems to have
inspired experiments
with textured
hair treatments.

"GRODNERTAL!" The Laughons made a Regency Grodnertal-style doll called "Matilda," a
"tall, slender lady with a tuck comb", who had previously evaded discovery. The 'treasure
trove' has uncovered three brand new "Matilda's," all with slightly different, egg-shaped
heads. The price lists from 1987 and 1990 both state that McCall's Super Book of Dolls,1979, and
Colonial Homes Magazine, January/February Issue 1980, feature "this type of doll."
Two "Matildas" with angular features and small heads appear on the left in the bench
portrait. These dolls show a family resemblance to the original pattern in McCall's Copy an
Old Doll. A similar angular featured doll has yellowing varnish, common to the Laughon's
older dolls. She has pierced ears, and her hands splay outward because of the placement
of her elbow joints, all features of the McCall's pattern. These angular dolls are clearly
earlier versions, conforming to the original pattern, while the three "Matildas" from the
treasure trove are the reinterpreted version: they have rounded heads without ears - pierced
or otherwise - and reconfigured elbows so that they can clasp their hands in front. This
resolves the question posed in Simple Gifts: "Where are Fred Laughon's "Matildas"?" -
provided that the dolls are tall, slender waisted, with mitten hands and tuck combs, they are
Fred's "Matildas."
There is an antique Grodnertal doll among the treasures, and although she is time-worn
she is a little gem. It isn't known when she was acquired or whether she was a direct influence
on their work, but in his lecture notes Fred wrote, GRODNERTAL in large, block upper case
letters, and I just like to think the particular Grodnertal he highlights IS that one. Fred notes
"I Got a Bru", and the small collection of antique dolls includes a Springfield doll and a
Milliner's-type doll, so it seems that he was actively purchasing antique dolls, demonstrating
a variety of construction techniques, when he compiled his lecture notes. The Bru herself does
not seem to have come to light.
