name. He cut the wood blocks
for the illustrations himself. His
most famous was The Remarkable Story of Chicken Little. It was first
published in 1840 when he was 25 years old. Written in rhyme, his
company is was well-known for publishing this story. The main
character, "Chicken Little" is hit on the tail by a falling leaf and
convinces his friends that the sky is falling. He is tricked by "Fox
Lox" who invites them to safety in his lair where he eats them all.
Chandler also published a moveable print of "St. Nicholas,"
with verses from Clement Moore on the back of his lithograph.
For a short time, Chandler also had a partnership with his brother,
Samuel W. Chandler, in which Samuel handled the business
and John was the artist. In 1843 they published, The Mansion of
Happiness, one of the earliest board games printed in the United
States. It was the forerunner of the Game of Life, still popular today.
Chandler also produced much commercial art.
After marrying in 1850, his wife became his partner in the
business. In the 1850s new techniques of mass production,
including the invention of the cylinder press and the production of
paper in rolls, decreased the price of printing dramatically.
For the first time printed materials were readily
available to the working class family. In 1854
Chandler began illustrating a series of
German and French children's books
which he had translated and then
published. In 1858, Chandler published
another game, entitled the Game of
Coquette and her Suitors. This one was
about a wealthy heiress and the men
who sought to marry her.
Chandler cut the wood blocks for
the illustrations in his books and for
his paper dolls as well. He used several
