paper toys. In 1854 he designed and carved the
lithograph wooden blocks for the first boxed paper
doll commercially produced in America, "Fanny
Gray," The set was published and printed by Crosby,
Nichols & Co. of Boston, a prominent publishing and
bookselling company. The company added a little
story about Fanny Gray and her exploits, illustrating
Victorian values - humility, kindness, duty, and
modesty. The book was done in rhyme.

professional career when
she was only 14 years
old. Augusta Maywood
made her debut when

Alice measures 4 ¾-inches
tall. Alice was the name of
Chandler's second daughter.

Fanny Gray's story - A history of her life
A small book is included in the boxed paper doll
set that tells of Fanny Gray's struggles and her fate;
of course, expressing a favorite 19th century moral:
goodness is rewarded. It was written in verse by
William Crosby and H. P. Nichols.
"Fanny lived in a little cottage near a brook,
shaded by a large oak tree. She was a happy
child. Her mother, a widow, worked very hard
to support them. Her mother once had servants
to wait on her. At night her mother often cried
when she thought about her situation, yet in the
daytime she always smiled for Fanny.
She worked very hard, but she grew weaker
and weaker until finally, she died. She left her
child an orphan, alone in the world. An old
woman took Fanny in and shared what little she
had. Fanny had no shoes, only an old red cloak.
She was forced to sell matches to pay for food
and collect sticks to warm her forlorn home.
One day a kind farmer passed her humble
hovel and noticed how sad she was. He had no
children. He took her in. There she wore a blue
apron over a neat, brown dress. She fed the
chickens, collected their eggs and sold them in
the city. There came a time when the farmer
became ill. She then provided for his needs.
In the city a wealthy stranger passed by,
and she offered him a nosegay of flowers from
the basket on her head. When she looked at him,
he recognized her as his only sister's child. His
home was empty. He was all alone and took in
Fanny. Although she now had everything she
could want, her heart was still free from worldly
pride. So lived the lovely Fanny Gray."
Notice how the costumes in Fanny's wardrobe
match this story. A cardboard backdrop also shows
the large Oak tree and her cottage home nearby.
Chandler's Fanny Gray was designed after the
Fuller book, Little Fanny, published in London in the
