From the Editor

s I come to the end of my term
as Editor of DOLL NEWS, I
would like to express my deepest
appreciation to all of whom I have had
the pleasure to work with to produce this
fine magazine. From the authors, artists and
designers to our UFDC Executive Committee and
Board Members, our staff and of course, our generous advertisers
and donors. It has been, without a doubt, a team effort.
Fall's issue comprises all things Gone with the Wind, an epic film
currently celebrating its 80th year since its release in December 1939.
Our cover feature begins with personal and well-researched insight
into the phenomenon of Gone with the Wind by Laurie McGill, who
shares her own beautiful Madame Alexander Scarlett doll on fall's
cover. A beautiful theme-related paper doll, created by paper doll
artist Ralph Hodgdon, follows and added to the mix is an exciting
pattern of Scarlett O'Hara's famous Bar-B-Que dress from the
movie itself, designed by our Contributing Editor, Sheryl Williams,
for the resin Huret-style French Fashion doll. Speaking of French
Fashions, Valerie Fogel offers a beautiful glimpse of luxurious
accessories that will have you 'swooning' over.
Our issue includes summaries of the 2019 UFDC Convention
in Nashville this past summer - Star Struck. Whether revisiting
this exciting week or seeking a glimpse, you'll find special exhibits
and other convention events, as well as the customary annual
business meeting reports. What a memorable week!
Susan York takes us to Cleburne, Texas to visit the Gone
with the Wind Remembered Museum, in a comprehensive feature
that will entice you for a visit the next time you are in North
Texas. We pay tribute to the Civil War era through Susan
Foreman's insightful feature about dolls of hospitality, while
Linda Holderbaum explores the war-related doll personalities.
In addition, Florence Theriault shares her interesting views
regarding mid-century American toy stoves, continuing on with
a closeup and personal story about the life of Huguette Clark, an
extraordinarily mysterious doll collector, whose life's story was
the focus of the best-seller, Empty Mansions. Jane Foster shares
her thoughts about some 'hard to find' Madame Alexander dolls.
I wish the best of luck and success to the
new editor and staff as they begin their
journey into the world of DOLL NEWS.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey
and take with me many memories of
learning and experiencing this wonderful
opportunity as Editor of DOLL NEWS.
