would be her home for the remainder of her life. Although Huguette
Clark chose to spend the last decades of her life in a hospital room,
the Fifth Avenue address remained her official home. The apartment
was maintained during that time in pristine condition, serving as the
repository of collections of art, music and of course, dolls.
In the early 1980s, the telephone rang at Theriault's. The caller
identified himself as Attorney Donald Wallace of Manhattan and
said, "My unnamed client wishes to bid on a doll in your upcoming
auction." So began the story of Huguette's relationship with Theriault's
which lasted for more than 35 years, a story that was told in the 2019
UFDC Convention Souvenir Journal.
After her death in 2011 at the remarkable age of 104, her doll
collection was eventually bequeathed to fund the culture and arts
projects of the Clark family's renowned California estate, Bellosguardo,
in Santa Barbara, currently being restored to its glory of its golden years.
To fund that project, the Huguette Clark collection of antique dolls and
dollhouses will be auctioned this coming January near the estate in Santa
Barbara. Attending the auction will be board members of the Bellosguardo
Project, as well as William Dedman who chronicled the life stories of
Huguette Clark and the Clark family in his best seller book, Empty
Mansions, The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great
American Fortune, co-authored with Paul Clark Newell, Jr.
As Theriault's President, Stuart Holbrook notes, "One hundred
and seventy years passed between the birth of William A. Clark and
