The company Side Show
is well known for their
wonderful character figures.
The "Brotherhood of Arms"
soldiers were produced in 2002,
depicting a wonderful variety
of 12-inch doll characters
with detailed costumes. From
left to right: a Confederate
1st Texas Infantry, an Infantry
Officer of the Army of North
Virginia, a Union soldier of
the 146th New York Zouave
Infantry and a Union 2nd
Wisconsin soldier. Side Show
produced others in this series,
as well as a "Legendary Icons"
group including General Jeb
Stuart, Robert E. Lee, General,
Stonewall Jackson, President
Lincoln among others.

The Infantry Officer of the Army of North Virginia is an
older individual with molded beard.
This Union 146th New York Zouave Infantry soldier has
his mouth open, perhaps shouting to someone. In
the U.S. Zouaves were brought to public attention by
Elmer Ellsworth, who ran a drill company called the
"Zouave Cadets." Such units were raised on both sides
of the Civil War. The distinctive uniforms of Zouave unit
included short open-fronted jackets, baggy trousers
(serouel), sashes and Asian-inspired head gear.
The Union 2nd Wisconsin soldier is part of the "Iron
Brigade" infantry, which included regiments from
three Western states and were noted for their strong
discipline, their unique uniform appearance and their
tenacious fighting ability. They suffered the highest
percentage of casualties of any brigade in the war.

The ordinary soldiers who served in the military may not
have become individually famous, but they were important
none-the-less. About 2.75 million soldiers fought in the Civil
War-2 million for the North and approximately 750,000 for
the South. According to historian Bell I. Wiley, who pioneered
the study of the Civil War common soldier, the average soldier
on either side was a "white, native-born, farmer, protestant,
single, between 18 and 29." The average height was 5-feet,
8-inches and the average weight about 143 pounds. Most
soldiers were between the ages of 18 and 39. Most of soldiers
in both the North and South had been farmers before the war.
Union rosters contained references to more than 300 different
occupations in addition to farming including accountant,
