The 16-inch Shirley Temple face mold (center) was used for a generic Dorothy character. too. The wonder and mystery of the factory process can be seen too with one doll utilizing the Shirley Temple face mold and one dressed in European costume. At the age of five (like many) I fell in love with Judy and The Wizard of Oz and told my family that I would go to Hollywood when I grew up, after all, it was a movie and that is where movies are made! Twenty years later I was in Hollywood and meeting those who made the film as I documented in books and shows the history celebrating various anniversaries such as this year. There have been many doll interpretations of Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz in the 80 years since the film's release. Collectors aspire to the 1939 doll and that crosses collectors of Garland, The Wizard of Oz, movie memorabilia, personality/celebrity dolls, and of course dolls overall. It is the doll of 1939, the time of Garland's creation, which may capture in doll form, the purest rendition of the characters personality. (Photo pins on dolls were made for the 1940 Judy Garland Teen Doll by Ideal). These alternate costumes are all believed to be original. 24 WINTER 2020
