Dolls of the 1950s Getting us ready for the 2020 National Convention we wanted to take a look at the 1950s. Following the end of the great depression and World War II, people wanted to live a normal life and raise a family. Jobs were abundant. Teens found rock and roll music and Elvis. Parents found more consumer choices. Children's toys offered a much bigger variety. What was better than getting a copy of the Christmas catalog from Wards or the Wish book from Sears? Popular dolls were majorettes, brides and ladies in the latest fashion. Baby dolls could drink and wet. Doll houses featured the latest styles of architecture. Materials for dolls were changing as well with the "Can't Break It" composition being replaced with hard plastic and rubber. Take a stroll through these pages from a 1950s Wards catalog and imagine what it must have been like to be a youngster scouring the pages to find that perfect doll to ask for. 74 WINTER 2020
