Madame Alexander 's Judy by Woolsey Ackerman A s World War II came to an end, Madame Alexander moved her focus from child and patriotic dolls back to dolls featuring extravagant fashion. In 1938 she had presented a high fashion model version of her 21-inch composition Wendy Ann doll presenting Madeleine Carroll's movie character Princess Flavia from Prisoner of Zenda. For the 1946 season she presented several fashion and character portrait dolls using this mold and facial paint once again. These would be amongst her last composition dolls. Movies were an inspiration. Judy Garland was appearing in the top box office musical of the year: MGM's The Harvey Girls, the story of wholesome adventurous young women who left home to have jobs in the respectable Harvey House eateries. Set in the U. S. West during the 1890s, the party scene gave Madame the motivation to create this beautiful doll with her brown eyes, brunette hair and Victorian ball gown inspired by that which Judy wore in the musical sequence.
