Q6. What can we do to return to growth?
A6. The key message is
WE HAVE LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES TO TURN THIS AROUND,
BUT IT WILL REQUIRE ALL OF US TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
The Membership Committee looked at this data last September. A number of projects were identified and each
member of the committee plus the team of new RD's took responsibility for one or more of the projects. We have
had monthly telecons since then and the following picture has emerged:
We believe that for UFDC to return to growth, we urgently need to do 2 things: BUILD ON OUR BASE and
EXPAND OUR FOOTPRINT.
To BUILD ON OUR BASE, we are looking at implementing a "+1 CHALLENGE" which will involve
each individual member (Club or MAL), each club and all the RDs in recruiting new members - Club, MALs,
Libraries, Museums as well as Junior Collectors. We are also looking at how we can reshape our CORPORATE
MEMBERS PROGRAM to build more win4
win partnerships with the many and varied
organizations in the doll world, lots of whom we
already have a relationship with.
To EXPAND OUR FOOTPRINT, we are looking
at "TARGETTING THE NEXT GENERATIONS"
- by making our offerings more accessible and
affordable, both to potential members in the 2050 age range AND Junior Collectors. We are also
exploring how we can "GO GLOBAL" - tackling the
Language, Cultural, Process and Leadership issues
involved. Diversification and new partnerships

are key to both of these. We need to cover ALL
aspects of doll collecting and offer the right balance
of annual conventions, regional conventions, day
events and virtual activities.
Upping our game on technology is key to
success in all of the above - we need to urgently
achieve a step change in our online presence; and
we are already working on how best to do this.
My intent in writing this is to be as transparent
as I can be about where we are as an organization. I
guess it is a "CALL TO ACTION." Unless there is
a critical mass of us (the current members) who are

willing and able to step up to the challenge, then
our membership numbers will continue to decline
and we will eventually get to the stage where the
UFDC that we all know and love will not be able to
function as it does now. And I, for one, think that
would be a great pity, not just for us as members, but
also for the doll world in general and the hobby we
hold most dear.
