The Tales of Genji, the 11th century Japanese book, appears
to have been a special favorite of Huguette Clark, who
commissioned a series of dolls based on characters in the book.
Each came in its original wooden with the name of the character
on the front, and the words "Mrs. Huguette Clark" written in
Japanese at the side-front of each box. The name of the artist is
unknown at this time.

Appearing center stage in this wide view of the auction
room are bébé by Jumeau in unique costumes created on
commission for Mrs. Clark by the studios of Christian Dior,
along with documentation and letters. The strumming mandolin
player automaton was a reflection of Huguette Clark's lifelong
passion for music; the collection featured many automata with
musical themes.

Huguette Clark's love of all-things-fashion inspired her interest
in the fashion dolls of Madame Alexander during the 1950s,
and her collection including outstanding examples of these.

Gazing forward to the future through her gilt ormolu lorgnette, the
society lady automaton is looked upon wistfully by the earlier Huret
poupee from an earlier era, as presented on a table display.
