Dressed for Success: Steiff's Remarkable TURN OF LAST CENTURY Circus Doll By Rebekah Kaufman I t's not easy being Green, or is it? Let's find out firsthand! I'm thrilled to share this handsome fellow with the worldwide doll collecting community. Not only is he quite the looker, he also has a remarkable backstory within the context of early 20th century cloth doll production. Come see what makes him so fascinating from the design and historical perspectives. This doll named "Green" is one tough act to follow. He was manufactured by Margarete Steiff GmbH of Giengen, Germany in the 1911-1919 time frame. Green is 43 cm tall, made from felt, solidly stuffed with excelsior, and fully jointed. He wears an elegant, gold and button trimmed yellow felt cutaway coat; fitted black felt pants; and a tan felt vest with black buttons. His fabulous footwear is buttoned, black oilcloth and tan felt "spats." His clothing and shoes are all integral to his body. His face and head comes to life with Steiff's legacy center 26 SPRING 2020 Steiff's Green doll, all photos from the author's collection.
