Artist Dolls T he work of doll artists is as varied as you can imagine. From materials to subject matter to size, these artworks can vary tremendously and show how creative we can be. With that in mind you see here two very talented artists working in different scales and different materials and at different times. And as always, we need to keep in mind the historical context of when the dolls were produced and what was popular and "collectible" at the time the dolls were made. Miniature in size is the 1 ½-inch bride shown here in her glass dome. She was created by doll artist Elaine Cannon who lived in Batavia, Illinois. Elaine made dolls from the 1930s to the 1950s. Her miniature dolls were sold through Kimport and were once carried by Marshall Fields. Unusual materials were used as part of her creativity and descriptions include a grain of wheat being used for the heads of her tiny creations. The artist's name is written on the bottom of the miniature glass dome. 32 SPRING 2020
