Alexander designed outfits-including a bridal
gown, long formals, and more casual dresses. A
17-inch doll with the Polly face named "Mary
Ellen Playmate" was made exclusively to be
sold at the Marshall Fields Department Store.
She wore a lovely soft pink organdy gown with
rows of lace. In the large Sound of Music set by
Madame Alexander the Polly face was used on
"Maria." Madame Alexander offered a Marlo
Thomas doll inspired by the television series
"That Girl" that aired in 1966-1971. This doll
is a brunette made with the newer Elise body
type, and she did not have the Polly smile.
Marlo Thomas, a one year only doll made in
1967, was offered in two different outfits-a
royal blue and green dress with white high
heeled boots and a garnet and red velvet gown.
This doll bears a striking resemblance to the
celebrity. Very unusual to find is a prototype of
the Marlo Thomas doll made in 1966 marked
ALEXANDER19(C)66 on the back of her head.
The prototype doll wore a red and white day
dress with square snaps. Many baby boomers
remember "That Girl."
