Book stuffed dolls that are also 12-inches tall. The
dolls illustrated on the front of the pattern were even
given names and are shown on the front in their circa
1860 outfits: Mrs. Cartright (A); Mrs. Cabot (B); Mrs.
Carter (C); Miss Jennifer Boyles (D); Mrs. Enright (E);
and Mrs. Eustis (F).
Composition and rubber were used for manikin
type dolls in special kits in the 1940s and into the
1950s. The 12-inch "Dress Me" doll here is made
of composition. She has molded and painted hair
typical of the 1940s. There was nothing else with this
doll so we can only image that the bride dress she
wears was fashioned from a pattern that came with her. Some of the
dolls were marketed with names such as Suzanne, Marianne and
Peggy. This doll was produced between 1942 and 1949. Her arms
are "pegged" to set into shoulder sockets. Her shoes have pegs that
lower into holes in the wooden square base. These dolls were made
by Simplicity Pattern Co., Butterick, McCalls and Singer as well as
Canadian Dominion Pattern, Ltd. and DuBarry Pattern Company
in London. Dress patterns were sold by McCalls, Simplicity and
Butterick in cooperation with the Singer Sewing Machine Company.
Dated from the mid-1950s is the Bridal Party Sewing Kit.
Produced by Hassenfeld Brothers, Inc., from Pawtucket, Rhode
Island, the box itself is 18-inches wide by 15-inches long and
2-inches deep. The set contains four hard plastic dolls along with
different color material, thread, ribbon and needles for sewing the
dresses for the bride and bridesmaids.
Doll Dresses Crocheted and Knitted by American Thread Company,
Starbook (No. 161) is also dated to the 1950s. The patterns in the
