doll that is being sold as all original has incorrect shoes so you
can make a better purchasing decision.
When collecting the 1950 to early 1960s small high-heeled
fashion dolls, the variety of styles of shoes is amazing. Especially
among the popular 10 ½-inch dolls, outfits and shoes made for
one doll were marketed as wearable by all the similar dolls.
Dime stores sold generic replacement shoes sourced from
yet different manufacturers. Some doll companies used certain
signature styles of shoe, while others probably changed
suppliers often and didn't worry about consistency. Adding
to the complexity, shoe styles often changed over the years
a particular doll was made. Nonetheless, there are a few
generalizations that can be drawn.
Unfortunately, many dolls sold as all-original wear wrong
shoes. Separate pairs of shoes are also often sold with whatever
attribution the seller thinks will attract the most interest -- after
all, they do usually fit fine. Even dolls shown in reference books
can have incorrect or replaced shoes. For example, the Collectors
Encyclopedia of Vogue Dolls Identification and Values by Judith Izen
and Carol Stover -- the go-to reference for Jill and Jan -- pictures
almost every known outfit, and describes what shoe styles are

original. Yet it must have been difficult to ensure
correct shoes for every outfit illustrated because
some, such as the shoes shown with outfits 3138
and 3166, are not those styles. Shoe confusion
appears in other reference sources as well.
Mint-in-box (MIB) dolls and outfits from this era
usually can be removed easily from the packaging
and replaced after play, so even having a doll
described as mint-in-box is no guarantee that she
wears correct original shoes. The Fortune Miss Pam
looks mint in her box, but when examined, was
very clearly marked "Ginger" on the back of her
head! What happened there? A correct Miss Pam
would be marked Circle P on the back of the head.
It certainly makes it hard to trust that her shoes are
correct for Miss Pam. As always, "Buyer beware!"
There was also a significant market for
replacement shoes that are not original to any
doll. Doll shoes tend to break and go missing very
easily, and the thin vinyl can't be glued or repaired
