tall. Her blond hair is in a standard saran pageboy with no added
embellishment. Her bodice has fewer rhinestones in design, but
otherwise the dress design duplicates that of the Margaret doll.
Binnie's head was later used for the fashionable Cissy, who
was soon joined by her petite shadow Cissette. A 1957 model is
the first of several Cissette ballerinas continuing into the 1960s.
She has a standard early Cissette hairstyle, sleep eyes, and wears
a multi-layered pink tutu. This doll, like Cissy, has jointed knees;
however, her molded high-heel feet are stationary.
In 1957, Madame Alexander produced 16 ½-inch Elise. A
hard plastic Alexander doll with jointed knees and feet, she has
vinyl arms which are jointed at the elbows. During her years of
production, ballet costumes were a staple of her wardrobe. This
early Elise's ensemble is accented by her rhinestone earrings and
pearl necklace. The skirt has many layers of tulle; a cascade of
flowers on her bodice matches her coronet.
American Character's Betsy McCall also fostered interest in
ballet. The most popular dance outfit for this 8-nch doll seems
to be the spring green waltz length ensemble. The skirt is multilayered tulle with an elastic waistband; the neckline of the separate
bodice of green satin is also draped in tulle accented by pink roses.
Although her feet are flat, her bent knees enhance her posing.
