The black swan Odile is the antagonist in Swan Lake.

hard plastic body and limbs have jointed knees and ankles.
Another allusion to traditional ballet is the inscription molded
on her vinyl ballet slipper "Capezio Since 1887/ Dancers
Cobbler." The Capezio company has a worldwide reputation
for outstanding dance shoes.
As noted previously, black tutus usually allude to Odile
of Swan Lake. All hard plastic with a vinyl head, a mysterious
Odile has sculpted curved arms, as well as jointed knees
and ankles. Her tutu is particularly well made with a silver
lamé bodice, and silver trimmed black net skirt, indicating a
higher price point doll despite her ambiguous marking of a
"50" on her head. Her pink shoes are also embossed with the
"Capezio" logo. This doll shows similar characteristics to the
Niresk Industries advertisement for Nina Ballerina from 1956
which also mentions Capezio shoes.
Dollikins by Uneeda, marked on her vinyl head, premiered
in 1957. This beautiful doll looks as if she is debuting in Swan
Lake in her beautiful white satin and tulle tutu, with satin arm
coverings and white tights. Her shoes are missing. The dark
rooted hair with the distinctive widow's peak style provides
the perfect foil to her ensemble. Nineteen inches tall, her
hard plastic torso and limbs are fully jointed at not only the

knees and ankles, but also the upper arms, elbows, and wrists,
making her uniquely poseable.
Effanbee entered the world of ballet dolls early in the
decade. Company catalogs show a jointed ankle, bent-knee all
hard plastic ballerina as early as 1952. Utilizing their popular
Honey face, this 19-inch ballerina has her dark blond hair
styled into a low bun in the catalog, but loose here. Wearing a
pale pink satin tutu with a bow at the shoulders and trimmed
with flowers, this doll has soft plastic slippers tied with ribbons
The tagged Junior Miss, on the other hand, is a hard
plastic, flat-foot, straight leg walker. Her pale skin and blue
sleep eyes complement her beautiful dark hair, crowned with
a coronet of pink flowers which match those on her bodice.
Her high quality tutu is of pink satin with pink satin ribbon
ties and delicate tulle netting. Pink tights and satin ballet
slippers with ribbon ties complete the ensemble. The wrist
tag on this 13-inch Honey mold doll reads: "I AM/ JUNIOR
MISS/ a Doll with/ GLAMOUR/ An / EFFANBEE/
DURABLE/ DOLL."
Effanbee archives also show a later doll as Junior Miss
Ballerina from 1958. Although she has multi- jointed hard
plastic legs and torso, her arms and head are vinyl, but clearly
of different chemical compositions. The arms have turned
