Do you remember watching the afternoon clock move so
slowly at school? You could hardly wait until the last bell would
ring and you could run to the bus or begin your walk home.
Once there and after calling out "Hi Mom!" the television would
be clicked on, warm up and soon the familiar tune of American
Bandstand would begin. Were you a penny loafer or saddle shoe
kid? Either way, you would begin dancing to the tunes introduced
by the enthusiastic host, Dick Clark. From 1952 to 1989 American
Bandstand featured teenagers dancing to Top 40 music. There was
a featured "live" artist who appeared in person to lip-sync one of
their latest songs.
Are you surprised to learn the first host was Bob Horn and the
show was originally called Bob Horn's Bandstand? True! In October
1952, it premiered on Philadelphia's WFIL-TV as a weekly live
ballroom style show. Four years later, with limited popularity and an
unfortunate incident with host Horn, the station asked a fresh faced
New Yorker who had been working as a DJ and announcer for the
Bandstand show. Dick Clark was instrumental in pitching the show to
parent company ABC as a way to appeal to the youth and raise their
teen ranking around the nation.
On August 5, 1957 the renamed American Bandstand aired live
from Philadelphia in the 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. slot. It was a smash hit!
Two days later Paul Anka made his national debut with his song
"Diana". The 1950's saw the debut of other singers and groups
like Simon and Garfunkel, Dion, Jerry Lee Lewis and the last
performance of Buddy Holly. By the end of the 1950's, American
Bandstand was the most popular daytime show on any network.
The 1960's truly brought the dance crazes to the front on
Bandstand and throughout the nation. "Fast Dancing and Line
Dances" had replaced the ballroom style; The Stroll, Calypso, The
Bop, The Walk, The Shake, The Alligator, The Dog. In August 1960,
