Other influences of the 1950s was music. By 1954,
Rock and Roll was here to stay. "Rock around the
Clock" sung by Bill Hayley & His Comets was the
number one on the Singles Charts for weeks and
becoming the anthem for the 1950's rebellious youth.
Hops and School Dances would play vinyl records
and girls wore "poodle skirts" or felt skirts with
conversation-starter appliques that might show the
person's hobbies or interests. The skirts were worn with
tight shirts or sweaters and saddle shoes and short socks
to complete the look. By 1956, Elvis Presley was well
known and on his way to stardom in the movies with
Love me Tender (1956), Loving You (1957), and Jailhouse
Rock (1957), before enlisting in the Army and to
continue his reign into the 1960s. This all had influence
on the 1950's culture and the youth of the day. There was
also the rise of the Beat Generation and the "all black
attire" influence on fashion with another counterculture
narrative that would remain into multiple decades. It
was a time when most of the country felt anything was
possible.Yet the seeds of unrest and inequalities were also
being recognized, but this is for the 1960s.
