Kaulitz did not consider her dolls to be art objects
that required high prices. She meant them to be toys
for children, not collectors' items. (I wonder what she
would make of their status today?) So, they were priced
about the same as other dolls, despite their artistry. And
they were built to last, but with the idea if they were
broken, they could be easily replaced. Like Kathe Kruse,
she did all the quality control - all the dolls passed
through her hands before being send out into the world.
She never registered a DRGM Design Patent for
her dolls. These patents were used to register small
inventions and novelties pertaining to a doll. This is
unfortunate, as it would have revealed some aspects of
her doll making process. They were not made in large
numbers, and because of the short-lived production,
there are not many records.
To date, sixteen distinct facial molds have been
identified. The dolls came in a range of sizes, from
12-inches to 25-inches, with the same head design
found on different sized dolls. Between different facial
painting, various wigs or painted hair (boy dolls only)
and different clothing, each doll was unique. This was
intentional - Kaulitz is recorded as saying "no two dolls
should look alike."
Most of the heads are socket heads but a few are
shoulder heads. They are usually described as being
made of "hard composition" but sometimes they are
also described as "papier mache." These are similar
materials, but there are many components used in both
and each manufacturer had their own recipe, so the
results varied greatly in hardness. But composition is
generally much harder and more durable than papier
mache so the Kaulitz dolls that have survived are
usually in good condition.
Renaissance paintings and sculptures of children were
often used as a source of doll head models for art dolls.
Kaulitz was said to have been influenced by the work of
the Renaissance artist Donatello. The doll head modelers
were Paul Vogelsanger, Josef Wacherle and Marie MarcSchnur. Paul Vogelsanger's designs were mainly the
heads with modelled hair and calmer, more friendly
faces. Even from 1909 to 1910, after the other Munich
artists are no longer mentioned as being instrumental
in the making of Marion Kaulitz's dolls, Vogelsanger is
still noted as working with her so it is not surprising that
most of the head models are attributed to him. Joseph
Wackerle designed the more expressive heads with one of
the common features being a protruding upper lip. The
only reference I could find to dolls designed by Marie
Marc-Schnur were two wax doll heads.
