Marian Kaulitz, Aline Stickel and others painted
the heads. The vast majority of Munich Art Dolls have
painted eyes and closed or open/closed mouths. Some
have painted eyebrows, some have none. They were
painted using oil-based paints. Whatever paint was
used, it has stood the test of time and most Munich
Art dolls found today retain both their patina and
their colour.
The Cuno & Otto Dressel doll factory made the
majority of the high quality, jointed composition bodies
found on Munich Art Dolls, although K&R and Kestner
have also been mentioned as suppliers. All the socket
heads are found on these body types, most with jointed
wrists, a few with straight wrists. The rarer shoulder
heads have been found on a variety of bodies - cloth or
leather with wooden, composition or bisque arms.
Marion Kaulitz, Alice Hegermann, Lillian Frobenius,
Helen Stein and Hermine Baretsch were all involved
in dressing the dolls, typically in German or French
provincial costumes or colorful children's play clothing.

fabrics including silk, cotton, velvet and knitted wool.
In terms of markings, the dolls are sometimes signed
at the base of the neck "Marion" and sometimes initials
"V" for Vogelsanger or "K" for Kaulitz are faintly
discernible at the back of the head. Sometimes there is
also a number (e.g.) K2 or KIII. The Kaulitz trademark,
the image of a young girl pulling a platform toy in the
form of a sticker or decal, occasionally appears on the
back of the neck, although they have normally worn off.
It is not known how many dolls Kaulitz made in total.
However, a record exists showing that she sold another
four dolls to the Sonneberg Doll Museum in 1912 and the
invoice numbers the dolls are 2965, 2966, 2967 and 2968.
Looking at that, I found myself wondering if that was the
number of dolls she had made up until that date?
These dolls are real treasures and are highly sought
after today. But it was not always thus. There are horror
stories of some early collectors and dealers removing the
heads of Munich Art Dolls and throwing them away in
order to use the bodies. I don't know about you, but that
makes me weep.
