Here is one of the original
Munich Art Doll postcards.
These are the four dolls
that were donated to the
Sonneberg Museum by Marion
Kaulitz in 1912. Numbered on
the invoice as dolls 2965, 2966,
2967, and 2968.

From the markings on
the back of the postcard,
it looks like this postcard
was both bought and
posted at the museum.

1913 ONWARDS - THE LADY VANISHES

Whether it was the impact of the lawsuits or
something else, in all the books/articles I have read,
there is very little mention of either Kaulitz or her doll
business from 1913 onwards. I did find one mention of
her making beverage warmers with doll-type heads in
1915, the heads being either adult females with ethnic
features or childlike, the latter having cloth arms.
There is also a note of dolls being made in a
studio headed by Kaulitz through the early 1920s
and there is a specific mention of Kaultiz dolls in
1923, representing various races. But there are no
details and no pictures.
There is a letter, written in 1915 by a Mrs Lilli B.
to Kathe Kruse, which says "I bought 3 dolls from poor
Kaulitz at Christmas time. The poor soul had tried to commit

suicide because of the suffering needs for another day's
survival." It makes you wonder what happened between
1913 and 1915 to lead her to try to take her own life.
In 1924, Kaulitz moved to a small town called
Bayrisch Gmain with her friend Aline Stickl, who is
listed as a "painter of art" in the town archives. She died
there on June 6, 1948, at the age of 83.
It was a sad ending for the women whose creativity
had taken the doll world in a new direction. Unlike
Huret, Kaulitz did not enjoy lasting success in her
lifetime. Despite her obvious talents, she disappeared
from the doll scene as quickly as she had arrived, cheated
of both fame and financial reward. It's like the doll
world's version of Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes."
But the good news is she left a wonderful legacy
which we can all enjoy today.
