They would often paint decorative designs on the tin to give it a higher
perceived value for customers who could not afford silver. While the husbands
and sons worked in making the metal, the wives and daughters were often
the artists responsible for painting designs on these pieces. As times changed,
toleware became more and more popular, especially with the onset of the
Victorian period, with their love of everything ornate and decorated. It is most
likely at this time that the popularity of tole painting on non-tin items such as
wooden furniture really became popular.
The area around Lancaster, Pennsylvania had been known as "the Garden
Spot" since the 1800s, inspiring the name of the Garden Spot China Company,
which sold china and pottery as well as souvenir gifts like dolls, postcards and
the miniature furniture. Pieces bore a paper label with the shop name on the
underside. Although it was implied that Amish people made the miniature
furniture, it is unknown who really made it. A second label on one of my pieces
does state that it was locally hand-made. The most cunningly-made pieces
with opening drawers and moving parts are probably the earliest. The painting
was clearly hand-done on all of them, even the ones from Japan.
Some of my other pieces come from a set that according to the seller was
purchased and stored away in the original boxes until now. The boxes are
unlabeled except for a stamped number and handwritten descriptions of
each piece. This furniture is also unlabeled (and it should have a country of
origin stamp or sticker if not made in the USA). The pieces have irregularities
in the construction and painting that show they are clearly hand made, and
they are simpler in design than the tagged Garden Spot ones - there are no
