UFDC Souvenirs from the Region Nine 1990 Conference N ovember is Native American Month and we will celebrate it here with these two dolls that also fill another category-regional conferences. Waccamaw Chief and Waccamaw Princess were created by doll artist Brenda Stewart for the Region Nine "Dawn over South Carolina" conference held in Myrtle Beach from September 6 to 8, 1990. This conference was hosted by the Coastal Doll Collectors Club. Created entirely of porcelain the 13-inch Chief was the souvenir doll and the 12-inch Princess was the companion. They are both made completely of porcelain with painted features and wigs. They came dressed in authentically-styled leather outfits. The chief has a wrap of white rabbit skin. The inside is decorated with geometric yellow, red, and black painted designs. The Waccamaw people are an indigenous people of the Southeastern Woodlands, who lived in villages along the Waccamaw and Pee Dee Rivers in North and South Carolina in the 18th century. North Carolina recognized the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe of North Carolina in 1971. 76 FALL 2020
