VINTAGE DOLL EXAMPLES

Patty-Jo by Terri Lee was made from 1947 to 1949. Made of
composition-like hard plastic, the doll is 16-inches tall and marked " Terri
Lee Patent Pending " on the back. She has a black wiry mannequin-type
wig and painted facial features. This doll is dressed in the original TerriLee-tagged red and white check dress, matching panties, white socks, and
replaced shoes. Patty-Jo was inspired by African American cartoonist,
Jackie Ormes' comic-strip character Patty-Jo. Ormes collaborated
with Violet Lee Gradwohl, the company's founder, to bring the threedimensional version of her comic-strip character to life. Ormes painted
most of the Patty-Jo dolls, and she cleverly used her comic strip " Patty-Jo
'n Ginger, " which ran in the Pittsburgh Courier from 1945-1956, to advertise
and promote sales of Patty-Jo dolls.
Saralee Negro Doll by Ideal Toy Company was made from 1951 to 1953.
The doll is vinyl, 17-inches tall, with a brown cloth body, sculpted black
hair, brown sleep eyes, and a closed mouth with a molded tongue. " Ideal
Dolls " is inscribed on the head. Saralee wears a light blue organdy Idealtagged dress, white socks, off-white shoes, and a replaced blue bonnet.
Marketed as the first anthropologically-correct Black doll in the United
States, Saralee was created by Sara Lee Creech, a White woman, who
felt Black children should have Black dolls with features like their own.
Eleanor Roosevelt, Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Bunche, and Leontyne Price
were among the several dignitaries of the time who were photographed
with the doll and helped promote it.

Talking Christie
was introduced
in 1968 as a
friend of Barbie
and could share
Barbie's clothes.

Never-removed-from-box Talking Brad from 1970, Christie's
boyfriend, wears a multicolored shirt with orange shorts.
