Here are the three UFDC National souvenir dolls that were created by Xanthos Kontis.

ome dolls leave you wanting to know more. Were more dolls made? Who was the person that
made them? The first three souvenir dolls created for the UFDC conventions beg these questions.
The dolls: Pa Pitt from the 1953 convention, Osceola from 1954, and Father Knickerbocker from
1958, were all created by Greek artist Xanthos Kontis. They were showcased in a Focus article in the
summer 2020 issue of DOLL NEWS. Now let's take a look at some of his other creations.
Mark Farmer catalogs from the 1950s carried his dolls and shed some light on Kontis himself. In
piecing together more information we find that he studied at the Athens School of Art, teaching sculpture
classes and apparently received numerous awards. He opened a family workshop making toys, dolls and
animals but closed his shop during World War II. He came to the United States and shorted his name from
Contaridis to Kontis. He lived in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and retired from his doll business in 1968. He
passed away on October 31, 1994.
A paper presented at the 8th International Toy Research Association World Conference in Paris* in July
of 2018 mentions: " Unavailable tools or materials were 'invented,' for example, the unbreakable pasta
for the doll's head by the sculptor Antonis Sohos ... and his student Xanthos Kontarides. " The paper
describes other dolls that Kontis may have had a hand in as well as this " pasta " that they are made of. The
paper continues:
" The dolls came in many sizes-between 25cm and 100cm tall-and described as 'modern.' The children
have made both character or boudoir dolls, and dolls that represent everyday characters like drunkard,
gypsy lady, or dolls dressed in Greek traditional costumes. They also produced shop-window dolls and
puppets. The doll's head was constructed from compressed paper or cloth (imported felt or linen in a
leather color) mixed with gum or glue suitable for stuffing or made from unbreakable pasta-to ensure
