paint and dress dolls in authentic costumes. In
an interview for DOLLS magazine, MacLeod
said, " My dream was to preserve these people
for posterity, going about their daily tasks,
carrying the tools of their trades and wearing
their everyday serviceable clothes. "
Her first doll was the Hebridean Woman,
carrying the dried peat from the peat banks
in her creel (basket) to the roadside where it is
transported to the crofts (farms). Each standing
or sitting doll is 8-inches tall with beautifully
modeled and painted clay composition heads
attached to a cloth covered wire armature
body. Hands and shoes are modeled from clay
composition. Hands are detailed and some
even have gold wedding rings painted on
their fingers. She used real lambswool from
Highland wool mills for hair. No detail was
ignored to bring life to each character.
MacLeod would spend a week or more
sculpting each face. Her research included
studying the faces and complexions of the
various people in different areas in Scotland.
She set-up a cottage industry employing many
outworkers who would sew clothes, knit the
tiny sweaters, and craft miniature replicas of
creels using fine cane to weave the tiny baskets.
Her father and son made the wooden seats
for the characters to sit on. Her daughters
gathered miniature seaweed from Fife
to place in the baskets. Some of the
fisherwomen carry their fish wrapped in
tiny replica newspapers.
The first series had ten dolls. By the early
1980s, there were 12 dolls available. There
were four types: fishwives, fishermen, island
women and crofters. MacLeod decided to
change the material that she was using
for the heads and limbs from the clay
composition to a polyester resin. She was
not pleased with the coloring of the resin and
eventually changed the painting to make the
figures more doll-like. The dolls still retained
their character. Her determination to create
meticulously detailed doll figures did not affect
the quality of her dolls.
MacLeod not only enjoyed success as a
dollmaker, but she was also honored with
several awards. Her dolls were selected by the
British Design Centres to sell. The Centres'
tags are often found on the dolls along with

The Crofter Making Creel was an independent tenant of his
land. He tended his sheep and cattle on the hill. Here he
is depicted weaving a creel. The creel is a craft miniature
replica using fine cane to weave the tiny basket.
