LEFT TO RIGHT:These actual dolls which

were gifted to Commodore Perry and
brought back from Japan in 1853 are in
the mitsuore, or three-fold style, able
to stand, sit, and kneel in the Japanese
fashion. They are slightly sexed.

A Showa era (second quarter of the
twentieth century) 19-inch ichimatsu
doll stands unclothed, revealing
her construction with fabric parts
connecting her gofun covered hard
parts. Her torso is wrapped with her
signature papers which conceals her

A 12-inch nineteenth century
Sonneburg taufling doll has a papier
mache swivel head and hips, wooden
arms and legs, and fabric joining the
hard parts with a sound mechanism in
the soft torso. The wrists and ankles are
" floating. " The glass eyes are pupil-less.
The black smudge above the doll's ears
was originally the painted tuft of hair
in the Japanese style for a young boy.

bout the time that Ludwig Greiner was making papier mache
dolls in Philadelphia and Izannah Walker had a thriving
business making oil painted cloth dolls in Rhode Island, exploration
was continuing on the North American continent and beyond. The
Core of Discovery Expedition of the Louisiana Purchase, led by
Lewis and Clark, had reached the Pacific Ocean in 1805. California
became a state in 1850, with Oregon following in 1859. With Pacific
