the front is crossed right-over-left, as is
typical for women's clothing in the western
world. In the Japanese tradition, a kimono
worn in this way is reserved for a person

Changes occurred in Japanese dolls early in the twentieth century as
well. As illustrated in Weldon's painting, Dream-time, Japanese play dolls
before the twentieth century tended to be male. They had the shaved
hairstyles popular for boys, and their features were rather sharp. Then,
in the 1920s, a remarkable historic event featuring dolls took place. A
ship, the Siberia Maru, steamed west across the Pacific Ocean, docking at
Yokohama on January 17, 1927. It carried nine boxes of " Blue Eyed " dolls,
a gift of friendship from American children to Japanese children. This
ship was followed by seven more ships, from which disembarked a total
of 12,739 department store variety dolls in time to celebrate Hina Matsuri
on March 3rd, an important festival honoring girls and featuring displays
of dolls. The " Blue Eyed " friendship dolls were distributed to schools
across Japan for children to enjoy.
Of course, there is a story behind this significant and unusual gift of
dolls. After communication was originally established between the United
States and Japan, Japanese immigrants began to settle on the west coast
of America, especially in California. Because of racial tensions in 1924, the
US passed an uncompromising anti-Japanese immigration bill, prohibiting
further immigration, and leading to increasingly poor relations between
the two countries. Two men, dedicated to peace and friendship between
the United States and Japan and working from opposite sides of the Pacific
Ocean, organized an unprecedented offering of the gift of dolls from the
children of one culture to the children of a very different one.
