pince-nez. Most of them had in common a flexible type of
spring arrangement that pulled the lenses together toward
the nose and clasped them to the nose. The doll-sized and
human-sized pince-nez shown here both use spiral springs.
There are two separate sliding bars that keep the glasses
more vertical allowing for better vision correction. The dollsized version is of exceptional high quality and is almost
an exact duplicate of the larger pair. The small glasses are
perhaps a promotional item made by the manufacturer,
around 1900-1930. The spring mechanism was later
modified to be used for modern human clip-on sunglasses.
Next, we turn to lorgnettes and hand-held glasses. The
photo, above right, shows a doll-sized lorgnette, along
with a human example. The photo just below shows
the same miniature spring lorgnette folded and latched
(about 2-inches long in this portion). " Everything after the
sentence starting with " Although " is okay. Although this
particular type of lorgnette was made for over 100 years,
the tiny lorgnette was made in about 1920. Further to the
left shows the same doll-sized lorgnette open, along with
a human example. When a small button is touched, the
lorgnette springs open to be used as pair of hand-held
glasses. The miniature is gold and is an extremely rare,
fully functional lorgnette with real glass lenses. Dealers and
collectors often call these " opera glasses, " but they were
never originally sold under this name. They are properly
called lorgnettes.
The doll-sized and human-sized optical items here are
known as " hand glasses. " They were commonly worn
around the neck on a chain or string. Human-sized hand
glasses were popular from 1840 until about 1860. Opticians
hated any optical devices held by hand because the hand
movement wouldn't allow precise and reliable vision
correction. Eventually hand glasses shown at the right,
were replaced with pince-nez, not much better in terms of
correcting vision. The solid gold miniature glasses were
probably not intentionally made for dolls, but more likely an
exhibition piece, made with beautiful detail and precision.
The full-sized pair for humans was made with the same
level of detail because they were considered to be fashion
accessories. The lenses in the doll-sized pair are real glass
but not lenses that corrected vision.
