Italy was a major force in World War II.
They were part of the Axis, which in addition to
Germany, also included Japan. The Italian doll
world was still led by Lenci-the company started
by Elena and Enrico Scavini. The ownership
shifted from Madame Lenci to the Garella
Brothers, who allegedly had ties to Mussolini.
Felt dolls dressed in the Italian Balilla or fascist
uniforms appeared under the Lenci label. The
sweet faces from 300, Rita, and 110 series wore
the tan shorts and black shirts of their real-life
counterparts. Other Italian doll makers followed
Lenci's lead in creating similar fascist dolls.
For Great Britain, the German onslaught
was personal. The constant blitz with bombs
was meant to intimidate and cause low morale.
Instead, the British dug in and fought back. The
war presented hardships for many British toy
makers. Their manufacturing warehouses were
surrendered to the armed forces. Materials used to
make dolls and toys were now needed for soldiers.
Nevertheless, dolls were used to raise funds for
the war cause. Chad Valley, Dean's Rag Book and
Norah Wellings made dolls in military dress for
the children and as premiums to buy war bonds.
Norah Wellings featured a page of military dolls in
their 1938 catalog. The dolls featured in the catalog
included the commodore and WAAC doll pictured
here. The star of the British war effort was Harry
the Hawk. This doll, dressed as a parachuter,
had a label that stated that the proceeds from its
purchase would be used for the Royal Air Force
Comfort Committee Fund.

Toys of Patriotism
Hilda Miloche and Wilma Kane created a series of paper dolls
with a military theme. Our WAVE Joan was one of them.

Like World War I , Americans were not eager
to enter the war until the Japanese bombing
of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Patriotism was at an
all-time high with war posters requesting war
bonds, encouraging enlistment into the armed
services and asking women to work for the war
effort, and toys!! Paper dolls featuring children
as soldiers were designed by Hilda Miloche and
Wilma Kane. They featured " Our Soldier Jim, "
" Our WAVE Joan " and " Mary of the WACS " to
name a few. Paper dolls featuring female military
personnel reflected the reality of women's
involvement in the war. Many women were real
life Rosie the Riveters. They worked in factories
to make parachutes, sew uniforms, and serve
as medics in the army. One can image little girls
