felt this trauma very acutely.
Another sad commentary concerns Jewish children who lost
not only their toys, but their lives. Denise and Micheline Levy had
their fine cloth dolls taken away as they were deported from Paris
to Auschwitz in 1944. A neighbor of these girls saved the dolls in the
hopes that they would return. Frederique Gilles, who kept the dolls
all these years, has donated them to the Holocaust Museum in Paris.
The topic of war propaganda and its effect on children is a
complex subject with many plots and twists that deserve further
research. Children seemed to be ripe for the message. From the
British recruitment poster from 1915, one can see that children
could be used to guilt their parents into the war. It is also likely
that children wanted and persuaded their parents to buy war toys
so that they can be part of the war effort without leaving home.
The amount of combat toys produced speaks to economic gains
earned by toy companies during the war. The incredible attention
to detail made them more desirable to children; perhaps even
encouraged them to eventually enlist in the armed forces. War toy
production began to wane just before the end of the war, showing
once again how dolls and toys are a mirror of our history.
