Black Bride Dolls

and was created by T Kamek, circa 1980s.

believe in the saying " beauty is
in the eye of the beholder " and
for me, that beauty is alive in
black bride dolls. My passion
for these dolls first took root in the
late 1980s when looking at the 1950
wedding photo of my dear mother.
The photo was not very good since it
was taken outside in the church yard
where the sun blinded my parents'
eyesight. Their facial features were
not recognizable due to squinting and
shadows from the bright sunshine. I
took the picture and two others that
actually showed their facial features
to T Kamek, an artist who was very
skilled at painting from pictures. He
created a beautiful oil rendition of
my parents' wedding day that started
me on my quest for collecting black
bride dolls. I became fascinated with
the dolls' facial features, dress, hair,
shoes, jewelry, and bouquets. No, the
fascination was not that I dreamed
of being a bride as a little girl; no,
my dream as a little girl was always
focused on being an independent
career lady. Growing up in rural
Georgia, the mantra drilled into some
of us was for girls to know how to
