a lady of 1849 (or more likely a lady of 1854 based on a fashion plate in Graham's magazine) and a 1450 lady in
purple velvet with a hennin which became the prototype for the French Countess of the XV Century. These three
dolls were all new models in 1938 and would have been executed in one of the three larger sizes.
Dickinson had initially opened her doll shop in late December 1937 on New York City's Madison Avenue
above, and apparently in association with, the well-known children's bookshop, Young Books. Later she would
have a street level facility a few doors away. Here stock would cover the wishes of doll collectors of the day
from antique to contemporary, and from American to global representations. From early press write-ups it is
clear Dickinson had little or no prior experience in dealing with dolls. But she was good at self-promotion and
a quick learner joining as many doll related activities as she could. Apparently, Dickinson had success in selling
Heizer's consignment dolls and was impressed by the prices Heizer was getting for her larger dolls. In the early
part of 1940, the two ladies entered an arrangement over a new type of Heizer doll, which would become a
key design model for the rest of Heizer's career which lasted nearly to her death at age ninety-one. Dickinson's
proposal called for smaller dolls with females standing at about ten inches, sometimes less. Males would be
added later. And with the reduction in height came a reduction in price - instead of hundreds of dollars these
new dolls were to cost $35.00 each. In her letter introducing these new models to her clients Dickinson assured
them " the dolls were to be as complete in every detail as the larger ones. " Dickinson introduced the project in
an undated blanket letter to her clients, informing those that could not stop by the shop a photograph of the
new models.
There were five personages in the first lot of smaller dolls including Queen Victoria, Madame Juliette Récamier,
Queen Marie Antoinette, Queen Elizabeth I, and " a beautiful Madonna. " With the exception of the notably short
Victoria all the dolls stand about 10-inches in height. Heizer would continue to make the various models for
varying lengths of time up until 1955 even adding different small alternative versions of Elizabeth I and Victoria
