ilford Reservoir is the
Fishing Capital of Kansas.
The reservoir annually is
ranked as one of the best in the state
by the Kansas Department of Wildlife
and Parks for blue catfish, crappies,
smallmouth bass, wipers and white
bass. It has strong populations of
channel catfish and largemouth bass
as well.
March. Fish at night
or
in low-light,
when the fish hit the shallows.
Also try: Blue catfish move to the
shallows to feed on dead or struggling
shad. The north end usually provides
the best fishing.
Mid-spring
Best bet: As the water warms, the
reservoir's big smallmouth bass

become active. Many fishermen key
on main-lake points to catch big fish.
Look for pre-spawn areas near
riprap and rocky or gravel banks by
deep water.
Also try: April is also a good
month to fish for largemouth bass.
Try lake arms such as Madison,
Curtis, School, Farnum, and Rush.
Late Spring
Best bet: May is perhaps the most
anticipated month of the year for
Milford Lake anglers. Why? That's
when the crappies spawn. The best
fishing starts when the water
temperature reaches 65 degrees, and it
can last into early June. Look for banks
with a mix of gravel and rocks in
coves.
Also try: White bass also will move
into the shallows to spawn along
riprap or rocky banks and can provide
hot fishing in late May.
