Every metrologist knows that measurements are false. What
they ought also to realize, and make known, is that most tolerances are also false, and therefore bear no real relation to
functional need. Ignoring this fact perpetuates practices that
are detrimental both to economic considerations and to sustainable development. The generalized tendency to accept
"over-specification" has negative consequences for current
and future industrial organizations.
All of our thinking patterns are born of an era where the
world was thought to be without limits, and the attitude "In
for a penny, in for a pound" reigned uncontested. Since then,
borders have been opened, competition has become global,
and ecological awareness has slowly but surely taken hold:
opting today for "too much" is too expensive economically
and has too high an impact on our common resources.
It is high time we listened to the wisdom of our forebears:
"Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents,
it is loaned to you by your children." This wisdom, echoed
by insightful people of our own era (one might mention, for
example, Antoine de Saint Exupéry), informs us of our duty
towards future generations, a duty that must be taken into
consideration in industrial decisions and practices. The technological change that Big Data represents today offers a new
type of metrology: Smart Metrology. It offers a way to rationalize our strategies and decisions and thus move towards a more
expedient "strict minimum." In a world heading towards crisis, Smart Metrology is no longer an option...

Jean-Michel Pou is the President and Founder of Deltamu.
He has worked for over 30 years in supporting and enhancing the metrology function within companies, laboratories
of measurements, tests and controls. After about 10 years in a
calibration laboratory, passing from Technician to Accreditation Manager and then General Manager, he created Deltamu
to be proactive with the scientific and technical community
and to provide benefits to rigid companies and French and
international laboratories. He is Vice-President of the MontBlanc Industries competitiveness hub and Ambassador of
the Association Alliance for the Future Industry in the French
Region.
Laurent Leblond is an expert in industrial statistics with the
Quality Direction Department of the PSA Group. He got his
degree in statistics in France at the Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Administration Economique. He started his
career as a Research Engineer at the French National Institute
for Health and Medical Research, and 13 years ago, he joined
the PSA Group. His work involves the development and implementation of references for quality applications, and he
monitors and advises the functions related to design and manufacturing based on industrial statistics in the automotive
field. He serves also as an expert of the Statistics Committee of
AFNOR and he is a Member of the French Society of Statistics.
