The main objective of this study was to investigate whether
differences between healthy and lame cattle could be identified by capturing the magnitude and position of ground
reaction forces when the dairy cattle walked over the designed
platform.
The design centred around implementing a four-segment
walk-over-platform (WOP). Each segment is equipped with
four loadcells and high-precision signal processing hardware
to capture data pertaining to weight and position of each limb
of a cow. The weight and position are measured with very high
accuracy and are processed by an inference engine.
The system was trialled on two farms with over 200 cows
walking over the platform for several days. Lameness is detected by measuring asymmetry in weight distribution over
the limbs, changes in stride length and abduction. Other parameters that can be measured and used to enhance the system
in future research are asymmetry in diagonal weights, asymmetry in step overlap, stance time and walking velocity.
