detecting the crack propagation in steel plates through tracking
the changes of the magnetic fields. The experimental
results are found to be more consistent than the numerical
results, especially for the measurements made at a closer distance
to the steel plates. It is observed that the magnetic field
intensity increases as the damage progresses. A limitation
of the present study is that it focuses on detection of limited
pre-defined cracks. Future research can focus on addressing
this issue by studying multiple cracks in different orientations.
In addition, Neodynium magnets are used in this
study to enhance the magnetic field around the steel plates
and consequently, to improve the damage detection performance.
Optimizing the size, location and magnetic power of
such magnets is crucial for more reliable detection on larger
structures. However, the beauty of the proposed smartphone-based
approach is that it can be modified for various
SHM tasks in a crowdsourcing platform empowered by normal
citizens.
