The results for the four samples are given in Table 2, where
Se is the experimentally-established defective area. It can be
seen that the relative error for the four samples was less than
10%, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Conclusion
This paper discussed infrared thermal wave excitation,
thermal data sequence reconstruction and infrared image processing
methods with an eye to reducing digital noise and
improving the quality of thermal images. This was explored
by undertaking a qualitative and quantitative analysis of ice
defects inside honeycomb sandwich skin. The outcomes of the
work can be summarized as follows.
It was found under specific experimental conditions that,
although the local heat produced by a hot air gun is high, it
has the worst thermal uniformity. The thermal uniformity of a
single flash lamp was somewhat better, but the thermal uniformity
of a 2 × 2 matrix flash lamp array was found to be the best,
making this the best excitation device.
Polynomials were employed to fit the change rate of grayscale
values extracted from the first 100 infrared thermal
images in a data sequence of ice defects inside a honeycomb
sandwich skin. The 21st
order polynomial curves had the lowest
SSE, so these were fitted to the defective and non-defective
regions. The ice defects were finally determined by selecting
an appropriate fitting order and comparing the cooling rate of
the different materials. An adaptive Canny edge detection algorithm
and region growing approach was then combined to
qualitatively ascertain the range of defects by locating them,
automatically finding the seed points and applying a dual
threshold criterion.
Having improved three factors affecting infrared thermal
image quality, we aim to explore the interaction between external
and internal ice accretion and their simultaneous detection
from the skin surface in our future research.
